About the author of these pages

illusztráció

Let me begin by introducing myself : I am really called Game ( though I do not sign my tax declaration that way ... ) I was baptised Game by one of my high school classes . Now, you can no doubt deduce that I am a teacher ( of French) . You're now asking yourself why a French teacher is writing computer programs ? I also thought a lot about it and I finally found an answer : because it amused me .
.
A very long time ago, in prehistoric times when half the world still lived in the trees and the other half went to work with a flint axe, the screen of computers was pitch black with a desperately blinking cursor running over it. Well, about almost 25 years ago, at the school where I used to work, some archaic computers had been discarded. I managed to recover one . I took it to my home. I carefully put it on my desk and I was very happy to be trendy , to be in tune with the modern times . From time to time I switched it on to see if it was still blinking but exploration ended there . The conquest of cybernetics was done for me.
.
One day a 12 year old kid came over to our place.. He sat down in front of the computer and within a few seconds fantastic kaleidoscopes began to invade the screen. Suddenly I felt so overwhelmed , stupid and ridiculous that I decided to take my revenge : I started to learn to tame the computer ... Well, voila, Webxercices present you some fruits of my efforts.

Webxercices Paragraphs

Paragraphs menu offers you some programs that mix up the paragraphs of a text of your choice and of which you will have to restore the initial order. To achieve this you will use not only your memory, but also in-depth analysis of the logical succession of different elements that constitute the framework of the text.

The PARAGRAPS page can handle all texts written either from left to right or from the right to left. This type of activity is part of many language exams and is an excellent kind of exercise.

To start you must first find a suitable text. In the INFO menu you will choose LINKS AND RESOURCES item to find some ideas.

To start

1. You must start first with finding a text to be studied. Then you must read it carefully several times. With the left mouse button down you select your paragraphs by passing it over the text . Then you click over the selection with the right mouse button. The menu that appears will offer you the COPY option.

2 . You will now select on the front page of Webxercices the menu point PARAGRAPHS. In this page you'll have to delete first the text of explanation, then pass the mouse pointer over the empty text area, operate the right mouse button and select the PASTE option.

3 . That's it! Your selection is in its place now. If you had selected precisely seven paragraphs everything you will have to do is to click on Verify option to begin work . If the number of paragraphs is not OK or you want to work with a text with paragraphs of your own, just position the cursor at the breakpoint you have imagined and click on the menu to insert a hash tag (number sign: #) and mark the break.

4 . If verifying reveals inappropriate structure, your text appears uncut but with signs (hash tags) for existing ruptures. Now you must ensure that the number of labelled breaks is 7 . ( add or remove ) . Check to find out. 5 . When you start work in the text area, you will find my instructions on operating mode during work. ( I suggest you try it out first with this sample text . )

Options in the top menu

(To be used during the preparation)

Clear Text Field: delete all text that appears in the text box.
Insert #: Before the first check you can work out paragraphs using the methods of word processing. Once the text is checked and have not been accepted, you will have to insert # signs manually to mark paragraphs. After each paragraph a # should be placed to mark the end. There must be 7 in the text, the last of which will be the very last character of it.

Check Format: To start working you must first check if there really are seven paragraphs in the text. For this you must click on this item.

Background : If you want a different and more pleasing colour to your eyes you should click on this option repeatedly until the colour suits you.

Reordering

During the reordering of text you can move a paragraph up or down by clicking on the arrows next. Click on an arrow pressing the left button of the mouse.

Options in the bottom menu

: (To be used during work)

Is it at its place?: A paragraph in its place remains black. Red marks errors.

Verify order:If the order is incorrect, a red bar and arrow mark the break. The paragraph becomes blue.

Complex verifying: You can do the two previous checks at the same time.

I am ready now: When you consider that the text is in order again, click here to finish.

Short texts

Using the "Short Texts" you can learn by heart, analyse or simply discover a text of your choice in a funny and playful way. You must first find a text corresponding to your level. Have no idea? You can have a look at the text resources in LINKS menu.

To start

First of all you'll find a text entry box with some advice about the program. After clearing these instructions you can insert there a text of 150 to 600 characters consisting of a maximum of 100 words or symbols. The text can be in one of the following languages: English, French, Hungarian, German, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese. It should be an integral text without formatting (poems are not welcome). By clicking on the letters from below you can paste them to where the cursor is. Your text must still be checked before you start working. Once the verification is OK, you can choose your favourite program from the menu above. You can also view the other points of this Help page for some additional information about these programs.

Enigma decryption game

This game is to decode a hidden text covered by # signs. You'll write the the decoded word in the text area box above. Each set of # is a word composed of the same number of letters. You can help you not only by your memory and by the analysis of the text (sentences, articles, negation ...) but you can also ask for certain information on a given word by clicking the menu items at the bottom. After selecting a menu option, you have to click the word for which you need information . This will still cost credit points which will decrease compared to what you had originally. If you have no more credit, you can not decode the text.

Credit: The number of credit points is the total number of words in the text multiplied by eighty.

Initials: For the words of more than 2 letters you'll get the first letter by clicking on that word. (5 pts) (5pont)
Vowels : You'll see the vowels of the given word (20 pts)
Mixed letters : You will see all the letters of the word mixed . (40 pts)
Originals : You'll see the hidden word . (80 pts) ( Works only in "single" mode)

Unique - All : From the menu below the chosen options will be displayed for all words (using up the number of credit points that matches).

Severe - Easy : When typing your answer, the difference between lowercase - uppercase is ( is not ) taken into account. (this option also decreases the credit points)

Enter : Used to enter your answer in the text box. For letters that you do not have on your keyboard you click those below and this will paste them to the point where the cursor is . Then you validate your answer by clicking on the chosen word ..

Clear all : Before you write your answer you can delete everything in the text box.

Background: If you want a different colour more pleasing to the eyes, click this option repeatedly until the colour suits you .

Multiple choice test

The Webxercices multiple choice test is just like a multiple choice test except for the fact that it is completely different .... The identical sequences ###### hide 4 choices. This is by clicking them repeatedly so an option appears in turn . As a reward for your perseverance, the original text is revealed gradually. This type of game will teach you to look at a language not as a mass of words stuck by the rules of grammar , but as a coherent text subordinated to the needs of communication., You will, of course consider the role of grammatical constructors and the precision of the elements that form expressions, but you will not forget that a sequence of words - although correct in itself - may not necessarily be correct in the text you are working with.

The " exam " mode that you have to validate before starting means that you can not check your text before completing the whole. To enter "exercise" mode you click simply on "No". This will let you check your work as you progress in decoding . Whenever you check the text, all words not yet found will enter in the result ( your last check appears therefore as a separate item in the line of results).

Puzzle, reordering texts

The words of the text appear jumbled. To re-order you must remember the text but your talent of an analyst in linguistics will also help you find the next word. To put them in their place you must strictly follow the order of words in the original text. Let's find first the one that would come next in your sentence and click it. If this is correct, it goes back to its place and appears green. Otherwise the correct word would also appear in its place but this time in blue. You can monitor your score up in the result line.

The colour of the background is also adjustable. To save your score click "Finish", then choose the "Save the whole page" in browser's options.
